Wright State hosts 5th annual Scarf Frenzy

On Tuesday, Wright State University employees hung scarves throughout the seating area in Dunbar Library for students to shop through. This was their fifth annual Scarf Frenzy event.

Throughout the year WSU employees get together to knit and crotchet hundreds of hats, gloves scarves, and mittens. These items are then given away for free to students in the library.

The donated items are created by the Wright State Knitting and Crocheting Circle and sponsored by the Women’s Center and University Libraries.

According to University Libraries, during last year’s event over 100 items were given in less than 15 minutes.

The event started at noon with around 300 items to give away.

According to Cindy Vanzant, assistant director to the Women’s Center at WSU, the winter clothing items came from more than just their Knitting and Crocheting Circle.

“It was a lot of hands to make these items,” Vanzant said. “St. Paris knitting group sent around 40 items with one of the daughters who are a student here, family and relatives of Wright State staff and faculty donate items as well.”

There are currently around 30 members in the Wright State Knitting and Crocheting Circle, they meet every Friday.

The circle started in 2012 and originally created blanket squares, according to Vanzant.

The items created were donated to organizations throughout the Miami Valley until they decided to hold an event for students.

“It makes my heart smile, it’s heartwarming to see our students pick out what they want,” Vanzant said. “They are very selective, they will look at one and touch it then look at another but then oftentimes go back to that first scarf they looked at.”

Any items leftover from the Scarf Frenzy event today will be set outside the Women’s Center located in Millet Hall for anyone to take.

“It’s nice to see when I’m walking in and out of the building or to my car in the parking lot I will see students wearing the scarves and gloves we gave away,” Vanzant said.
